U.S. Senate Makes Agreement to Revive Immigration Laws, Ending Stalemate

(Bloomberg) -- The Senate agreed to end a week-long
stalemate over immigration legislation yesterday, just hours
after President George W. Bush endorsed a plan to speed $4.4
billion in funding to border security projects.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid, the Democratic leader, and his
Republican counterpart, Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, said
the Senate would resume debate on immigration possibly as soon
as next week.

Lobbyists shape Senate immigration battle

(Reuters) - The bill, backed by President George W. Bush and a bipartisan group of lawmakers, ties tough border security and workplace enforcement measures to a guest-worker program and a plan to legalize an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants.




The proposal, which on Thursday fell 27 votes short of what was needed to move the bill toward a final vote, has split lawmakers and divided public opinion across the United States.

Bush to Tout Climate Concessions, Balk at Fixed Emissions Targets at G-8

(Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush will defend
his call for a new roundtable on combating global warming at
today's Group of Eight summit, resisting European pressure to set
binding targets now for emissions cuts.

After giving ground to European critics last week by
proposing an international conference to tackle man-made
pollution that is overheating the earth's atmosphere, Bush said
he won't go further when the summit on the German seaside
formally starts today.

US utility CEOs warn on difficulty of carbon cuts

(Reuters) - "It's not all going to be easy," Farrell added, saying he
was dubious of American's willingness to bear the cost of
cutting emissions of carbon dioxide.




President George W. Bush called on Thursday for a global
meeting on climate change, stressing new technologies to make
energy use more efficient and restating his rejection of firm
caps on carbon dioxide emissions.

UPDATE 1-US Democrats to fund Iraq war with no pullout date

(Reuters) - WASHINGTON, May 22 - President George W. Bush won
a battle over nearly $100 billion to fund the Iraq war as
congressional Democrats on Tuesday abandoned troop withdrawal
efforts for now but pledged to try again in July.




Instead of setting schedules for withdrawing U.S. troops,
it appeared the Democratic-run Congress and the Republican
White House agreed for the first time to include conditions
prodding Baghdad to make better progress toward quelling
violence or risk losing some U.S. reconstruction aid.

Democrats in Congress Urge Bush Not to Weaken the G-8 Climate Declaration

(Bloomberg) -- Democratic leaders in Congress are
urging President George W. Bush not to weaken a Group of Eight
declaration on climate change.

The Bush administration wants the G-8 to scrap some targets
for cutting greenhouse-gas emissions and remove language
stressing the need for urgent action from the group's proposed
statement on climate change, according to a draft copy of the
statement.
