Kenya shilling eases vs dollar due end of month demand

(Reuters) - The Kenyan shilling weakened slightly against the dollar on Tuesday due to end-of-month demand mainly from the energy sector, dealers said.

At 0845 GMT, commercial banks traded the Kenyan unit at 67.50/60 against the dollar compared with Monday's close of 67.45/55.

Kenyan shilling firms slightly vs dlr in quiet trade

(Reuters) - The Kenya shilling was slightly stronger against the U.S. dollar in quiet trade on Monday due to lack of dollar demand, dealers said.

At 0930 GMT the shilling traded at 66.65/75 to the greenback compared with Friday's close of 66.75/85.

Standard Bank buys control of Kenya's CFC Bank

(Reuters) - The Kenyan unit of South Africa's Standard Bank plans to acquire a 60 percent stake in Kenya's CFC Bank, subject to regulatory approval, the two banks said on Monday.

The CFC Bank group, with assets of 40.4 billion shillings at the end of 2006, would be renamed CFC Stanbic Holdings.

Kenya's Safaricom 06/07 pretax profits rise 40 pct

(Reuters) - Kenya's leading mobile phone company Safaricom said pretax profit rose 40 percent to a "record" 17.19 billion shillings in the year ended March 31.

Safaricom also forecast a rise in subscriber numbers to 8 million by the end of the year from 6.8 million currently.

Virgin begins Kenya flights, vows to help elephants

(Reuters) - British entrepreneur Richard Branson landed in Kenya on Saturday on Virgin Airlines' maiden flight to the east African country and vowed to help protect some 2,000 elephants threatened by encroachment.

The Virgin chairman said the endangered beasts were hemmed in by small farms mushrooming around Mount Kenya, stifling centuries-old migratory routes and sending some crashing across homesteads, threatening lives and damaging crops.

Kenya economy grew 6.1 pct in 2006 - government

(Reuters) - Kenya's economy grew 6.1 percent in 2006 compared with a revised growth rate of 5.7 percent the previous year, a government economic survey said on Monday.

The east African country said it expected expansion of between 5.8 and 6.5 percent in 2007.
