Sugar Rises on Prospect Rally in Crude Oil Prices Boosting Ethanol Demand

(Bloomberg) -- Sugar in New York gained on
speculation rising crude oil prices will boost demand for
ethanol, diverting sugar cane away from production of the
sweetener in Brazil.

Crude oil reached an 11-month high of $77.33 a barrel in
New York today after gaining for seven straight weeks. Brazil,
the biggest producer of sugar-cane based fuel and sweetener, has
boosted ethanol production while cutting back on sugar output so
far this season.

this year, 17 percent more than last year, according to a report
today by commodity researcher F.O. Licht. Trading houses posted

Sugar Heads to Weekly Gain in New York as Brazil Uses Cane for Ethanol

(Bloomberg) -- Sugar in New York rose, heading for
the biggest weekly gain in a month, as Brazil, the largest
sugar-cane grower, uses more of the plant to make ethanol.

Brazil used 57 percent of the cane harvested in the main
center-south growing region to produce ethanol and 43 percent to
make sugar in the first five months of the year, Reuters
reported, citing an industry association. The country will

Sugar Rallies in New York as Brazil Harvest Lags, Russian Demand Increases

(Bloomberg) -- Sugar in New York rose the most since
December on speculation that harvest delays in Brazil, the
biggest producer, and increasing demand from Russia are leading
to near-term tight supplies.

Rain and storms may disrupt the harvest in Sao Paulo, the
largest sugarcane grower in Brazil, according to Meteorlogix LLC
in Woburn, Massachusetts. Raw-sugar demand in Russia, the biggest
importer, rose as the domestic white sugar price jumped. Parts of
Ukraine and Russia have experienced drier-than-normal weather
since April, increasing stress to crops, Meteorlogix said.

Sugar Ltd., the world's biggest sugar broker, said on May 9.
