Berkshire Hathaway profit rises 33 pct

(Reuters) - Operating profit, excluding gains from investments and derivatives, rose 22 percent to $2.51 billion, or $1,625 per share, from $2.05 billion, or $1,331.




Analysts on average had expected profit of $1,460 per share, according to Reuters Estimates.

Markel posts higher Q2 earnings

UPDATE 1-Vornado FFO rises in second quarter

(Reuters) - Funds from operations, or FFO, a measure of REIT
performance that removes the effects of depreciation, increased
22 percent to $281.7 million, or $1.72 per diluted share, from
$230.4 million, or $1.49, a year earlier.




Analysts on average had expected FFO of $1.64 per share,
according to Reuters Estimates.

UPDATE 1-U.S. core inflation rose 0.1 percent in June

(Reuters) - Analysts polled by Reuters were expecting the core price
index to gain 0.2 percent on the month.




In the same report, the government said that, in seasonally
adjusted data, personal income rose 0.4 percent while personal
spending rose a less-than-forecast 0.1 percent, the weakest
showing since a drop in spending in September of last year.

UPDATE 1-Massey Energy's second-quarter profit soars

(Reuters) - Net income jumped to $34.9 million, or 43 cents per share,
from $3.2 million, or 4 cents per share, a year ago.




Analysts on average were expecting per-share earnings of 39
cents, according to Reuters Estimates.

UPDATE 1-Mexico economy grew 2.9 pct in May, above forecast

(Reuters) - Economic activity was up 0.35 percent in May from April
according to the monthly IGAE index, which measures the vast
majority of Mexico's economic output.

Granite Construction quarterly profit rises

(Reuters) - Total revenue fell 5.1 percent to $770.9 million.




Analysts were expecting earnings of 71 cents a share,
before items, on revenue of $772.8 million, according to

Genzyme 2nd-qtr profit rises, raises 2007 outlook

(Reuters) - The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based biotechnology company said net earnings rose to $139.9 million, or 51 cents a share, from $134.5 million, or 49 cents a share, a year before.



Excluding one-time items, the company posted a profit of 88 cents a share. Analysts had expected earnings of 81 cents a share.

UPDATE 1-Synovus quarterly profit rises; cuts '07 earnings view

(Reuters) - The Columbus, Georgia-based financial services company said
second-quarter earnings rose to $162.8 million, or 50 cents a
share, compared with $152.8 million, or 47 cents a share, in
the year-ago quarter.




Analysts had expected the company to earn 48 cents a share
for the quarter, according to Reuters Estimates.

Smith International profit rises

(Reuters) - Analysts on average had expected a profit of 76 cents a

Revenue in the quarter was $2.11 billion, up from $1.74

Schering-Plough profit doubles, shares jump

(Reuters) - Second-quarter profit increased to $517 million, or 34 cents per share, from $237 million, or 16 cents per share, a year earlier.




Excluding special items, the drug maker earned 41 cents per share. Analysts on average expected 35 cents a share, according to Reuters Estimates.
