U.K. Pound May Advance Versus Dollar on Outlook for BOE Rates, U.S. Growth

(Bloomberg) -- The pound may rise against the dollar
on speculation the Bank of England will keep raising interest
rates as the Federal Reserve keeps borrowing costs on hold.

The U.K. currency advanced to a 26-year high versus the
dollar after the Fed yesterday trimmed its forecast for economic
growth and Bear Stearns Cos. reported losses on hedge funds that
bet on bonds backed by subprime mortgages. Investors expect the
BOE to raise rates half a percentage point by year-end, futures
trading shows.

U.K. Pound Rises to 26-Year High Versus Dollar on Outlook for BOE Rates

(Bloomberg) -- The pound rose to a 26-year high
against the dollar on speculation the Bank of England will keep
raising interest rates while the Federal Reserve stays on hold.

The U.K.'s currency gained for a second day before a
government report tomorrow that's forecast to show that
inflation has exceeded the BOE's 2 percent target for 14 months.
The pound last week had its biggest gain in three weeks against
the dollar on speculation a slump in the U.S. subprime mortgage
market will curb growth in the world's biggest economy.

Pound Posts Sixth Straight Quarterly Gain on Outlook for Higher U.K. Rates

(Bloomberg) -- The pound posted a quarterly gain,
its sixth in a row, after a rise in consumer and mortgage lending
supported the view that the Bank of England will keep raising
interest rates to curb inflation.

Data showed consumer credit growth almost doubled in May and
mortgage approvals unexpectedly rose to a three-month high,
suggesting the BOE must do more to cool price growth. Policy
makers next decide on interest rates on July 5, and economists
surveyed by Bloomberg News expect them to lift the main benchmark
a quarter-point to 5.75 percent.

U.K. Pound Holds Near 2-Month High Versus Dollar on Interest-Rate Outlook

(Bloomberg) -- The U.K. sterling traded near its
highest in two months after Bank of England policy maker John
Gieve indicated interest rates are still too low to curb credit
growth in Europe's second-biggest economy.

The U.K. currency broke through $2 for the second time in as
many days yesterday on views borrowing costs will rise further.
Gieve, who spoke late yesterday, joined BOE Governor Mervyn King
and two other members of the Monetary Policy Committee in voting
for a rate increase in June. They were outvoted by the other five
MPC members who favored holding rates at 5.5 percent.

U.K. Pound Gains Before Bank of England Minutes Back Case for Higher Rates

(Bloomberg) -- The pound rose to the highest in more
than a week against the dollar on speculation the minutes of the
Bank of England's last meeting will reinforce the case for higher
interest rates.

Since the June 7 meeting, Governor Mervyn King and policy
maker Paul Tucker have again expressed concern about inflation,
underpinning expectations of an increase in borrowing costs. The
BOE will release the minutes on June 20. The pound also gained as
accelerating house prices added to the case for higher rates.

Pound Gains for First Week in Three Amid Speculation U.K. Rates Will Climb

(Bloomberg) -- The pound gained for the first week
in three on speculation the Bank of England will need to keep
raising interest rates to slow the economy.

BOE Governor Mervyn King this week said the bank ``may need
to take further action'' to contain inflation, a week after it
boosted the main lending rate to a six-year high. Monetary Policy
Committee member Paul Tucker said in a speech yesterday a pickup
in money growth is an ``amber light'' for future inflation.

U.K. Pound May Advance Amid Speculation Bank to Raise Rates This Week

(Bloomberg) -- The pound may advance on speculation
the Bank of England will increase interest rates at its monthly
meeting this week.

The currency traded near the highest in almost 15 years
versus the yen yesterday as a gain in Asian stocks encouraged
investors to use the so-called carry trade, taking advantage of
low interest rates in Japan to fund purchases of higher-yielding
assets, such as the pound. BOE policy makers are due to announce
their monthly decision on U.K. borrowing costs on June 7.
