South Africa Oil Companies Improve Pay Offer to Try End Strike, Union Says

(Bloomberg) -- BP Plc, Royal Dutch Shell Plc and
other oil refiners in South Africa improved their wage offer to
local workers in a bid to end a strike that has led to fuel
shortages in Africa's largest economy.

``We can't say yet what the improvement is,'' Welile
Nolingo, secretary-general of the Chemical, Energy, Paper,
Printing, Wood and Allied Workers' Union (CEPPWAWU) said by phone
from Johannesburg today. ``We're still negotiating.''

UPDATE 3-Shell applies to build C$27 bln oil sands plant

(Reuters) - CALGARY, Alberta, July 30 - Royal Dutch Shell Plc
plans to build an oil sands upgrading complex at its
Edmonton, Alberta, refinery that could cost as much as C$27
billion , putting it among Canada's costliest
projects, it said on Monday.




Shell said its proposed Upgrader 2 would be built in four
100,000 barrel a day stages, processing tar-like bitumen from
its Athabasca Oil Sands Project -- which is already undergoing
a multibillion-dollar expansion -- as well as its steam-driven
oil sands projects in the same region.

Shell Second-Quarter Profit Climbs 18 Percent as Refining Earnings Gain

(Bloomberg) -- Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Europe's
largest oil company, said second-quarter profit rose 18
percent because it earned more from its refining
operations.

Net income climbed to $8.67 billion from $7.32 billion
in the year-earlier period, The Hague-based company said
today in a statement distributed by PR Newswire.

U.K. Natural Gas Rises as Flow Cut at Shell's Bacton Terminal Cuts Supply

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. natural gas for delivery today
rose to the highest since Jan. 2 after flows of the fuel to a
terminal operated by Royal Dutch Shell Plc halted, cutting
supplies that were already reduced by repairs and maintenance.

Gas for delivery today rose 6.8 percent to 34 pence a therm
from a last day-ahead price on July 13 of 31.85 pence a them.
Today's price is equivalent to $6.92 a million British thermal
units. A therm is 100,000 Btus.

U.K.'s FTSE 100 Benchmark Index Declines; Shell, BP, HSBC Shares Lead Drop

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. stocks fell for a second day,
led by Royal Dutch Shell Plc and BP Plc after Goldman, Sachs &
Co. downgraded the energy companies' shares and crude oil
retreated.

HSBC Holdings Plc and HBOS Plc declined on concern losses in
subprime mortgages in the U.S. will erode economic and earnings
growth.

North Sea Brent Oil Daily Shipments Will Increase 16 Percent in August

(Bloomberg) -- Daily shipments of North Sea Brent
crude, part of the price benchmark for almost two-thirds of the
world's oil, will increase 16 percent next month.

Tankers are set to load 209,613 barrels a day of Brent crude
in August, from 180,645 in July, according to the loading program
of field operator Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Europe's largest oil
company.

European Stocks Rise, Paced by Shell, BHP Billiton; UBS, Peugeot Advance

(Bloomberg) -- European stocks rose after Deutsche
Bank AG increased price estimates for oil companies and Credit
Suisse Group said BHP Billiton Ltd. may expand in Latin America
to meet growing demand from China.

Royal Dutch Shell Plc and BP Plc lifted the Dow Jones Europe
Stoxx Oil & Gas Index to a record. BHP Billiton, the world's
biggest mining company, gained for the seventh straight day. UBS
AG rose after the largest money manager ousted Chief Executive
Officer Peter Wuffli. PSA Peugeot Citroen SA, Europe's second-
biggest carmaker, climbed on plans to increase market share.

Oil Rises to a 10-Month High on Nigerian Unrest, U.S. Refinery Shutdowns

(Bloomberg) -- Crude oil rose to a 10-month high, on
concern that unrest in Nigeria may curb oil shipments and
unexpected shutdowns at U.S. refineries will cut fuel production.

Nigerian gunmen kidnapped a three-year-old daughter of a
British expatriate on her way to school in the southern oil city
of Port Harcourt, a police spokesman said. Five contractors were
seized yesterday from a rig operated by Royal Dutch Shell Plc's
Nigerian venture. Futures pared gains after the Energy Department
reported that U.S. oil and fuel supplies rose last week.

Oil Trades Near 10-Month High on U.S. Gasoline Concern, Nigeria Rig Attack

(Bloomberg) -- Crude oil traded near a 10-month high
in New York on concern renewed violence in Nigeria and refinery
breakdowns may restrict U.S. fuel supplies.

Royal Dutch Shell Plc said five expatriate contractors were
abducted from a rig in Nigeria, where militant groups this week
ended a one-month truce with the government. A U.S. government
report today will probably show the nation's gasoline stockpiles
remained below average as rising demand and plant faults hamper
refiners' efforts to store fuel.

Crude Oil Trades Near 10-Month High After Attack on Shell Rig in Nigeria

(Bloomberg) -- Crude oil traded near a 10-month high
in New York after Royal Dutch Shell Plc said militants attacked
its rig in Nigeria, raising concern about further oil supply
disruption from Africa's largest producer.

Five expatriate contractors working for Lonestar Drilling
Nigeria Ltd. were taken hostage, said Precious Okolobo, a
spokesman for Shell's Nigerian venture. The attack occurred
early this morning in the Soku field, where the rig was drilling
a well. No production was affected, he said.

U.K. Stocks Rebound, Paced by Shares of Northern Rock, Shell; Segro Drops

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. stocks advanced, paced by
Northern Rock Plc after Goldman, Sachs & Co. recommended
investors buy the shares.

Royal Dutch Shell Plc climbed with the price of oil while BT
Group Plc rose after the phone company said analysts are too
pessimistic about sales growth.

European Stocks Advance in Quarter; Total, Linde, Swatch Pace the Gains

(Bloomberg) -- European stocks headed for a fourth
consecutive quarterly advance on speculation companies will keep
increasing profit and takeovers will lift shares.

Linde Group and BASF AG led chemical makers higher on
expectations they may merge. Swatch Group AG rallied after
Deutsche Bank AG recommended buying shares in the watchmaker
because revenue and profit margins may increase. Total SA and
Royal Dutch Shell Plc as oil climbed to a 10-month high.

European Energy Stocks, Shell May Rise; Daimler, Peugeot Might Fall

(Bloomberg) -- European energy stocks may advance
after Citigroup Inc. raised its forecast for Brent crude this
year and upgraded shares of Royal Dutch Shell Plc, the region's
biggest oil company.

DaimlerChrysler AG and PSA Peugeot Citroen may decline after
their U.S.-traded securities dropped.

U.K.'s FTSE 100 Index Falls, Led by Royal Bank, Barclays; BP, Shell Drop

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. stocks declined, paced by Royal
Bank of Scotland Group Plc and Barclays Plc after the battle for
control of ABN Amro Holding NV picked up in the largest takeover
in the banking industry.

BP Plc and Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Europe's biggest energy
companies, led oil shares lower after crude tumbled yesterday.

Shell's Nigerian Venture Begins to Restore Lost Output Following Protests

(Bloomberg) -- Royal Dutch Shell Plc's Nigerian
venture began to restore 150,000 barrels a day of Bonny light
crude oil today following an attack on pipelines yesterday.

Shell spokesman Precious Okolobo said villagers yesterday
raided the Bomu Manifold, a gathering point for crude flowing to
the Bonny export terminal. Production was briefly halted.

Crude Oil Rises on Supply Concerns as Militants Attack Nigerian Pipeline

(Bloomberg) -- Crude oil in New York pared gains after
production began to resume from a Nigerian pipeline that was
attacked and shut down yesterday.

Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Europe's largest oil company by market
value, has begun restoring 150,000 barrels of lost output after an
attack on a pipeline yesterday, said spokesman Precious Okolobo.
