US STOCKS-S&P, Nasdaq fall 1 percent on credit worries

(Reuters) - The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq fell more than 1 percent.




The Dow Jones industrial average was down 104.37
points, or 0.78 percent, at 13,358.96. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was down 19.34 points, or 1.31 percent, at
1,452.86. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 30.22
points, or 1.17 percent, at 2,545.76.

European Stocks Drop, Paced by BMW, Philips, Hypo Real Estate, Depfa

(Bloomberg) -- European stocks fell after reports in
the U.S. showed employers added fewer jobs than forecast last
month and growth in U.S. service industries slowed, reigniting
concern the world's biggest economy is cooling.

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG and Royal Philips Electronics NV
paced declines among companies that rely on sales in the U.S. The
Dow Jones Europe Stoxx Oil & Gas Index dropped to the lowest in
three months, led by Total SA and BP Plc after Citigroup Inc.
reduced its recommendation for the oil industry. Hypo Real Estate
Holding AG, the mortgage bank spun off from HVB Group, and Depfa
Bank Plc led financial shares lower.

Australian, New Zealand Dollars Rise as U.S. Stock Gain Lifts Carry Trade

(Bloomberg) -- The Australian and New Zealand
dollars gained for a second day against the yen as a rally in
U.S. stocks attracted investors to higher-yielding assets funded
by loans from Japan.

The two currencies headed for weekly gains, recovering from
two-month lows, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average had the
first two-day gain in two weeks. New Zealand's 7.75 percentage
point and Australia's 5.75 point interest-rate premium over
Japan make the currencies favorites for so-called carry trades.

UPDATE 6-Dow Jones OKs $5 bln sale to News Corp - source

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, July 31 - Rupert Murdoch is set to
achieve his decades-long dream of running the venerable Wall
Street Journal after Dow Jones & Co Inc.'s board agreed
to News Corp's $5 billion buyout bid on Tuesday.




The board decided to accept the offer at a meeting Tuesday
evening, according to a source familiar with the matter,
shortly after News Corp.'s board approved the deal.

US STOCKS-Futures extend gains on PCE data

(Reuters) - S&P 500 futures were up 13 points, well above fair
value, a mathematical formula that evaluates pricing by taking
into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration
on the contract.




Dow Jones industrial average futures rose 104
points, and Nasdaq 100 futures were up 18 points.

UPDATE 3-Bancrofts, News Corp. wrangle over Dow Jones price

NEW YORK, July 30 - Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. appeared close to gaining sufficient approval for its $5 billion bid for Dow Jones & Co from the Bancroft family, The Wall Street Journal said, ahead of a Monday deadline for responding to the offer.

European Stocks Pare Earlier Gains; Suez, Vodafone Lead Decline

(Bloomberg) -- European stocks erased gains. Suez
SA, the French energy and water group, and Vodafone Group Plc,
the world's biggest mobile-phone company, paced the decline.

The Dow Jones Stoxx 600 added 0.1 percent to 372.9 at 9:57
a.m. in London after climbing as much as 0.5 percent earlier. The
Stoxx 50 and the Euro Stoxx 50, a measure for the 13 nations
sharing the euro, both declined 0.1 percent.

Stock futures point to upbeat techs after Apple

(Reuters) - Thursday's busy results calendar includes earnings from top oil producer Exxon Mobil Corp , conglomerate 3M , Amgen Inc. , Bristol-Myers Squibb , Dow Chemical Co. and Aetna Inc. .




By 0902 GMT September Nasdaq 100 futures were up 0.1 percent, while Standard & Poor's 500 and Dow Jones futures were both down 0.2 percent.

U.S. Stock-Index Futures Decline; Dow Chemical, 3M Shares Drop in Europe

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stock-index futures fell before
more than 50 Standard & Poor's 500 Index companies report
earnings today.

Dow Chemical Co., the largest U.S. chemical maker, slid
before posting results. 3M Co., one of two Dow Jones Industrial
Average members due to report quarterly earnings, also retreated.

European Stocks Decline; ARM Holdings, Infineon Technologies, Telenor

(Bloomberg) -- European stocks fell, led by ARM
Holdings Plc and Infineon Technologies AG after Texas Instruments
Inc., the world's largest maker of chips that run mobile phones,
reported lower profit and revenue that missed analysts' estimates.

Europe's Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index lost 0.1 percent to
394.42 at 8:07 a.m. in London with 15 of 18 industry groups
falling. The Stoxx 50 slid 0.2 percent, while the Euro Stoxx 50,
a measure for the euro region, decreased 0.3 percent.

U.S. Stocks Gain on M&A, Earnings; GlobalSantaFe, Merck & Co. Shares Rise

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks rallied the most in a
week on $35 billion in acquisitions and Merck & Co.'s better-
than-forecast earnings.

GlobalSantaFe Corp., the second-biggest offshore oil and
gas driller, climbed to a record after agreeing to be bought by
larger rival Transocean Inc. Merck, the third-largest U.S.
drugmaker, had its steepest gain since April and accounted for
almost a third of the Dow Jones Industrial Average's advance.

Emerging-Market Bonds Advance as Investors Shrug Off U.S. Subprime Concern

(Bloomberg) -- Emerging-market bonds rose after
gains in U.S. and European stock markets suggested renewed
demand for riskier securities.

Concern about rising subprime mortgage losses last week
prompted investors to reduce their appetite for high risk
assets, including developing nation debt. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index and Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 0.5
percent today, while Europe's Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index gained
0.3 percent today.

Dow Jones quarterly profit falls, hurt by charges

(Reuters) - Second-quarter profit fell to $21 million, or 25 cents a share, from $28.8 million, or 34 cents a share, a year earlier.




The latest results include a charge of 13 cents per share for stock-based compensation expenses after Dow Jones' share price jumped from around $36 to $60 in early May following news that Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. had made a $5 billion bid for the company.

U.S. Stocks Rise on Earnings; IBM Leads Dow Average, S&P 500 to Records

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks gained after
International Business Machines Corp. and Bank of America Corp.
reported earnings that topped analysts' estimates.

IBM, the world's biggest provider of computer services,
climbed the most since 2003 and led the Standard & Poor's 500
Index and Dow Jones Industrial Average to records after saying
software acquisitions boosted results. Bank of America, the
second-largest U.S. bank, rose on private-equity gains and
investment-banking revenue growth.

WESCO International posts higher quarterly net profit

(Reuters) - Analysts were expecting the provider of electrical
construction products to post a profit of $1.27 a share, before
items, according to Reuters Estimates.




Shares of Wesco have gained about 10 percent in 2007,
underperforming the Dow Jones U.S. Electrical Component
Equipment Index , which has risen about 20 percent
year-to-date.

U.S. Stocks Retreat on Subprime, Earnings Concerns; Intel, Pfizer Decline

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks fell after Bear Stearns
Cos. told investors there's little value left in its two failed
hedge funds while Intel Corp. and Pfizer Inc. said competition
hurt earnings.

Financial shares were the biggest drag on the Standard &
Poor's 500 Index after Bear Stearns said ``unprecedented
declines'' in securities used to bet on subprime mortgages wiped
out the funds. Intel, the world's biggest chipmaker, and Pfizer,
the largest drugmaker, led the Dow Jones Industrial Average down
from a fourth-straight record.

UPDATE 1-Dow Jones board prepared to endorse News Corp bid

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, July 17 - Dow Jones & Co. Inc.
said on Tuesday that its board was prepared to recommend
shareholders accept a $5 billion buyout offer from Rupert
Murdoch's News Corp. , leaving the fate of the company
in the hands of its controlling family.




Under the terms of the agreement, News Corp. would buy all
outstanding shares of Dow Jones's common and Class B stock for
$60 per share in cash, Dow Jones said in a statement.
