Sumitomo Metal Mining Unit Boosts Philippine Nickel Shipments 35 Percent

(Bloomberg) -- The Philippine unit of Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Japan's biggest nickel maker, shipped 35 percent more nickel concentrate in the first four months of 2007 than a year earlier, according to customs data.

Coral Bay Nickel Corp. exported 7,781 metric tons to Japan compared with 5,756 tons between January and April last year, according to Bureau of Customs data obtained by Bloomberg today. Satoshi Oku, a spokesman for Tokyo-based Sumitomo Metal, could not confirm the volume when called by phone.
